2014 Crozet Running Ultrarunning Team: (L-R) Annie Stanley, Sophie Speidel, John Andersen, Bethany Patterson, Dan Spearin, Jeff Lysiak, Nick DiPirro (not pictured, Marc Griffin)

The Crozet Running Ultrarunning Team has some of Virginia’s top ultrarunners, but more importantly these athletes embody the character traits that make ultrarunning such an inspiring sport – passion, perseverance, grit, humility, and determination.  These runners are accomplishing amazing physical and mental feats,  all while they balance the important things in life like family, raising children, friendships, and professions.  We’re so proud of our team!  Like our Facebook page to keep up to date with their upcoming race performances.

Sophie athleteSophie Speidel:  Sophie has been running ultramarathons for the past 12 years and amazingly still remains    competitive, regularly placing in the top 10 at competitive mountain ultras.  Sophie has raised three kids in Charlottesville, is a school counselor and a girls lacrosse coach at STAB.

Annie CATAnnie Stanley:  Annie is another constant top 10 competitor, placing second overall in last year’s Lynchburg Ultra Series.  When she’s not out on the trails, she’s busy at home raising three young daughters in the RVA (Richmond, VA!).  Annie regularly makes the drive west to come train in the great mountain trails around Crozet.

Bethany and HortyBethany Patterson:  Also from the RVA, Bethany started dominating the trail running world over 10 years ago, winning prestigious races such as the JFK 50 Miler and Massanutten Mountain 100 Miler and being named Trail Runner Magazine’s Female Trail Runner of the Year in 2003!  After taking some time off to start a family (including twins!), Bethany is back to winning form in 2014.

Spearin HellgateDan Spearin:  Dan is a professional firefighter and paramedic and has been running ultras for the past three years.   Dan is currently fourth overall in the Lynchburg Ultra Series and placed in the top 10 at the Terrapin Mountain 50K.  He is raising two kids with his wife Jena here in Crozet.

Lysiak winterJeff Lysiak:  Jeff celebrated his 50th birthday in 2014 by running the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Miler.  Jeff went from not running at all at the age of 45, to placing in his age group in ultras.  He is a urology professor at the University of Virginia and he and his wife Jen have two boys and live in Crozet.

Nick at JIMNick DiPirro:  Nick is a pharamacist at the University of Virginia Medical Center and is the “fast guy” on the team.  With a sub 2:45 marathon, we are excited to see what Nick can accomplish at the longer distances.   Nick won the Jarmans Invitational Marathon this past summer and lives in Charlottesville with his running companion, Ringo the dog, and girlfriend Kristen.

Marc Griffin 2Marc Griffin:  Marc is the most experienced runner on the team, having run over 65 ultramarathons.  He is the only runner ever to have run every year of “The Beast” series races which includes three 50ks, one 50 miler, one 66 miler, and one 100 miler each year since 2008!  Marc lives with his wife and children in Fishersville.

MichelleMichelle Andersen:  Michelle is the inspiration for those of you who have never run a marathon or ultra marathon.  While having run several road and trail half marathons, Michelle is training for her first ultramarathon this winter, and we will track her progress as she breaks through new physical and emotional barriers during this journey.  Michelle is a certified running coach and operates the store on a daily basis.
